Sector 1 Lieutenant's Message
I
am Lt. Mark Covington and
welcome
to our police sector web pages, this devoted to Sector 1. This is
the busiest of all our patrol areas, and poses a lot of challenges in administration,
particularly from the unique businesses and diverse residential areas it covers. We
staff the sector at a minimum of 1 patrol officer on a 24/7 basis, and because of some of
the lengthy calls we must handle, this sector is the first to be backfilled from cover
units. Of course, the sector receives plenty of additional support from traffic
officers, other cover units, detectives, supervisors, and administrators.
Our greatest challenge is protecting the downtown core businesses from petty
thieves, shoplifters, and vandals. Fortunately, personal and violent crime is not
particularly an issue. Some of the things we're working on in our sector meetings
include improving the lighting under the Macy's parking lot, institution of a zero
tolerance on truancy from Las Lomas High and Del Oro High Schools, and special downtown business
crime suppression patrols during the holidays and other busy times. For all those efforts, we are holding
the line on our crime statistics, year after year, even with the increasing numbers of
shoplift-related arrest rates from the upscale Broadway businesses.
I have overall charge of police operations and policies on the sector, and I am
on duty from Friday through Monday from 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM. Please feel free to
contact me directly with any long term concerns or police issues in that area.
